The Woman Member of Parliament for Rubanda District, Evelyn Ninsiima Kikafunda, has launched a solar distribution project aimed at promoting environmental conservation and expanding access to clean energy in the district.
Kikafunda, who is also the founder of the Green Environment Climate (GEC), said the initiative will see more than 300 solar systems distributed to households in areas that remain off the national electricity grid.
The project was officially launched in Mushanje Parish in Ikumba Sub-county, one of the areas in Rubanda most affected by the lack of electricity.
“This initiative is about protecting the environment while helping people improve their livelihoods and develop their homes,” Kikafunda said.
She noted that this is the third time she has organized a solar distribution programme in the district as part of efforts to promote renewable energy and reduce dependence on environmentally harmful energy sources.
Several residents who benefited from the project welcomed the initiative, saying it would significantly improve their daily lives.
Among the beneficiaries were Patience Tusiime, Isaac Tumwesigye and Glorious Tumsikirize, who said the absence of electricity has long posed challenges in their homes.
They noted that access to solar power will enable them to light their homes, improve household safety and support small income-generating activities.
Local leaders say Rubanda District remains one of the areas significantly affected by the impacts of climate change, partly driven by environmental degradation and limited access to sustainable energy alternatives.
They say initiatives promoting renewable energy, such as solar power, are critical in addressing environmental challenges while improving living conditions in rural communities.
